Bike to Support Local Businesses and the Environment
Bike riding can have a direct impact on the environment, as well as our local community and independent business owners. In an article by Eillie Anzilotti in FastCompany, biking should play a vital role in the design and development of modern cities: “Designing a city for bikes will also achieve the goals we want for our future urban centers, making them more equitable, healthy, efficient, and clean. Cities that prioritize bikes over cars effectively reduce carbon emissions, and support public health both by creating clearer air for people to breathe and more opportunities for safe, active transportation. Bikes also enable many more people to move through the streets at a time than do cars, and when cities are especially concerned with overpopulation and congestion on the roads, bikes emerge as the more efficient option.”
Bikes reduce the need to build, service and dispose of cars. Cycling 10 km each way to work would save 1500 kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year. During its lifetime, on the road, each car produces another 1.3 billion cubic yards of polluted air and scatters an additional 40 pounds of worn tire particles, brake debris and worn road surface into the atmosphere.
Bicycling significantly reduces transportation emissions while also reducing traffic congestion and the need for petroleum.
When you rely on a car for transportation, you are more likely to go further for errands and not rely on completely carbon free forms of transportation such as walking and bicycling. Biking naturally encourages us to support our local businesses. Localism reduces sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and water pollution. Independently owned businesses more often source local products, such as farm produce, and local services like legal, accounting, and advertising.
And it gets better – according to a recent study cited on NPR, people who bike regularly tend to age slower. Back to Anzilotti’s article, “Because cyclists are more engaged with the street and their surroundings, researchers have found that cycling alleviates some of the loneliness often held up as a major driver of mental illness.” So, the numbers are in – biking supports the environment, our community and our selves.
